The Challenge
You've been taught to set SMART goals, so you use SMART for everything. But sometimes it feels too rigid, or people seem constrained rather than motivated by the specificity. Other times you've tried a more open coaching approach and it took too long, or the person just wanted clear direction. You suspect that different situations call for different approaches, but you're not sure when to use what.
Description
Goals set the same way for everyone rarely work. What motivates one person can demotivate another, and what works in one situation fails in the next. This workshop explores the range of goal-setting approaches available to you, from structured methods like SMART to coaching frameworks like GROW, from ambitious OKRs to learning-focused goals. You'll develop the judgement to match your approach to the person and the situation, rather than defaulting to whatever you've always done.
What You'll Walk Away With
A decision framework for choosing the right goal-setting approach based on the person and the situation
Clear understanding of when to use SMART, GROW, OKRs, learning goals, performance goals, and wellbeing goals
Warning signs that you've chosen the wrong approach and how to adjust
A quick-reference guide you can consult before any goal conversation
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
Assess what each person and situation needs and select an appropriate goal-setting method
Recognise when your default approach isn't working and flex to something different
Combine methods effectively when the situation calls for it
Distinguish between learning goals and performance goals and know when each is appropriate
This Workshop is For You If...
You tend to use the same goal-setting approach regardless of the person or situation
You've felt that SMART goals sometimes feel too rigid or controlling
You've tried coaching approaches that took too long or left people wanting more direction
You want a broader repertoire of approaches and the judgement to know when to use each
How You'll Learn
You'll work through scenarios that challenge you to choose the right approach, discuss the trade-offs with other managers, and practise flexing between methods. This session includes decision-making exercises, case discussions, and practical application to people you actually manage.
Our Approach
This workshop is part of a collection designed for managers navigating the real complexity of leading people whilst delivering results. Each session stands alone, but all share a common perspective: that sustainable performance and genuine care for people aren't competing priorities. They're connected. The practical tools you'll use here are designed to work in the pressured reality of organisational life, not just in theory.
